Years ago when I was still fairly young in the advertising industry I found a mentor. He was an industry legend with hundreds of national and international awards. The campaigns he created were well know in the industry. At the time I met him, he was just being inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame.
Over the years we had great conversation about what it takes to succeed in the industry. His stories we legendary and thought provoking. By the same token, there was also a lot of heartache and loss. One day during these conversation we started to discuss recognition and awards.
I asked him about all the awards he had won. Interestingly enough, he told me some were stored in boxes in a closet while others in a storage unit. Then I asked him what he thought about all those awards. “Every once in a while I go to the storage and my closet, take them out and look at them. I then think to myself, ‘I did that’. I’ve done something very little have accomplished.” “And then?” I asked. “I put them away again and go back to the real world.”
Read and meditate on Philippians 3:7-8. What do these verses say to you?
Take and inventory of all your accomplishments. How many of these accomplishments have eternal rewards?
What will you start doing today towards working on “storing up treasures in heaven” ( Matthew 6:19-21 )?
