Many years ago, a friend of mine had his identity stolen. Unbeknown to him, the thief had opened multiple bank accounts, taken out loans, and opened credit cards under his name. The thief was exploiting my friend’s good name and, more importantly, his hard-earned reputation.
After discovering the theft, he had to go through a lengthy and costly process of contacting each creditor to prove who he was. This effort required extensive documentation and an enormous amount of time. It took him a couple of years to finally clear his name.
Today he’s very vigilant about setting up security measures such as monitoring software and securing his personal information. He continually reminds me of how susceptible anyone can be to having their identity stolen.
His story reminds me we all have an enemy who seeks to destroy us by taking our identity. Scripture tells us he’s always on the prowl looking to devour us (1 Peter 5:8). His sole goal is to render us useless by stealing our identity to leave us scrambling to reclaim our lives.
Thus, we must stay vigilant by reading the word and praying lest we lose our true identity in Christ.
