I’m a big car enthusiast. Over the years I’ve restored, repaired and driven many different cars. From luxury sports cars to utilitarian trucks. I thoroughly enjoy driving and working on them on my own. A one point I owned both a Porsche and a Corvette. The Porsche I did some minor engine work on while the Corvette, I restored from the ground up, cylinder by cylinder. It took me almost two years to complete. For a brief moment in my life I had a “car collection”.
Compare this to someone I recently met at a car show. This man apparently owns over 300+ cars and has them stored all over the world. He owns anything and everything you can imagine. Sometimes he buys cars on a whim. Take for example the Formula One car with no engine. Even sitting still, this car looks like it’s doing 200mph. He collects cars just because he can.
All this pales in comparison to Italian private security magnate Luigi Compiano’s collection. In 2016 the Italian government held an auction of all his seized assets to recoup tens of millions of euros in unpaid taxes. There were a total of 817 lots including 423 cars, 155 motorcycles, 140 bicycles, 55 racing boats, countless bits of automobilia, myriad parts, and a number of vintage bobsleds. Apparently his appetite for “stuff” extended beyond transport. Authorities also seized and sold a number of properties, a dozen meat slicers, model cars and trains, a huge pornography collection, and two large lots of sex toys.
Auctioning off Compiano’s impressively large collection required the use of a 200,000 square-foot (18,580 square meters) warehouse and three days, requiring five auctioneers working shifts totaling 30 hours to sell the lots. In the end, a massive total of $54.20 million was collected.
