We recently visited family up north and before we set off on our road trip, we needed directions on how to get there. Before departing, I grabbed my phone and entered our current point of departure and our destination. The distance was about 700 miles. The app conveniently charted out the best and most efficient route for us to take. According to the app, if we drove non-stop it would take us approximately 9 hours and 17 minutes. Easy enough. We could get from point A to point B in optimal time. The only issue with this however, is it does not account for detours or stops.
This is the problem with maps. They can tell you how to get somewhere but they cannot tell you what you will find if you stopped at any given point in your trip. They cannot give you the temperature, sounds, smells or anything which forms an experience for you to remember. This is how many people view the bible. They see it as a map to guide their lives on route to their final destination rather than as a guide manual.
The bible is so rich on how we are to experience life rather than only living it. Instead of viewing the bible as a map, try viewing it as a tourist guide manual written by the author for you to experience the most of your travels in this life. Remember, we’re only here visiting, our true home is in heaven.
