“Wow. This is so much more than I imagined.” said my wife. I nodded in agreement. “How much do you think each table costs?” she asked. “Thousands” I, said. “Just enjoy the moment and don’t think about that,” I concluded. Over the years, we’ve attended various charitable fundraising events. There’s one in particular that stood out from all the others. This fundraiser was one of the first official black-tie events my wife and I ever attended. If you’re unfamiliar, a black-tie event is where all the men wear a tuxedo and the women their best gowns.
When my wife and I arrived, we immediately noticed how the organizer spared no expense to ensure everyone was having a good time. At the entrance, a waiter greeted us with welcome cocktails as he ushered us into a large foyer. We gathered with others to mingle as we awaited the grand ballroom doors to open. Shortly after, someone made the announcement inviting everyone to dinner. When we entered the dining ballroom, I was amazed and in awe of what I saw. There were majestic chandeliers, tables with our names, napkins folded into shapes of animals, illustrious silverware, beautiful bouquets everywhere, and so much more. The entire ballroom was pure elegance.
We had an unforgettable night as we enjoyed our meal, danced, and thoroughly enjoyed the festivities. We almost felt guilty knowing someone donated thousands for us to be there. However, we did not take it for granted and made the most of it. That event was one that we remember to this day.
This story reminds me of how Jesus invites many to His great banquet, but few accept the invitation. None of us are deserving of a seat at his table, and yet, He invites us to share in all the richness. What’s stopping you from accepting that invitation today?
