For a few years now, my wife and I have wanted to make the most of our back yard. Initially, when we bought our home, there was a small uncovered patio area. Unfortunately, it is not conducive for hanging out being uncovered and thus exposed the blistering sun and rainy weather.
Finally, this year the Lord blessed us with enough to move forward with our dream of building a covered patio area for having people over. As I discussed the plans with the builder, we reviewed various options. During our talk, we came across the subject of the pergola’s foundation.
Having recently poured a new slab, I asked about anchoring the posts to the slab. Initially, the builder agreed but then recanted and said he preferred to go into the ground. “I’ve built many of these, and the best way is to go straight into the ground and then pour concrete around them,” said Jose. “This gives it a solid foundation, more resilient to our storms and longer life.”
“It’s going to be a lot of work. You’re going to have to go through six inches of solid slab.” I said. “I know, but I prefer to do it the right way,” he replied. I knew he was right and agreed to move forward with his recommendation.
This story reminds me we’re to build our home, work, and life on a solid foundation of scriptural truth. There are many superficial ideas and beliefs out there that wash away what we’ve built when the storms come. Building your life with biblical truth will help you weather the storms.
