After fifteen years, my trusted laptop briefcase met its end. The handle just broke off right before I had a chance to lift it off the ground. It was time for a replacement, so I went to the local store to buy a new one.
As I surveyed the shelves of the store, I came across a variety of options. Most all of them had tags noting their excellent qualities. After reviewing all of the cases, I finally settled on two similar models. As most everyone would do, I quickly searched my mobile phone to compare prices and read reviews.
Both cases had positive reviews but one more than the other. The more reviews I read, the more I was swayed toward that particular model. Then something caught my attention. Of all the four and five star reviews posted, there was a single one-star review.
Curious about this, I decided to read the review. To my surprise, it had nothing to do with the quality of the case itself, but rather it said, “Too many five stars. Someone needed to give it a one.” It appears someone felt it was impossible for this bag to be that good and decided to downgrade the reviews.
This story reminds me of how discouraging people can be when we’re doing our best. Many times the need to diminish your accomplishments or success comes from pride and envy. Today, take the time to dismiss these destructive critiques and remind yourself that Jesus is on your side. There will always be detractors, focus on attracting others to Christ through your five-star response.
