The past couple of weeks have gripped much of the world with fear and panic. Undoubtedly, a substantial number of people who have contracted the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have fallen ill or died. There are also cases of those who have survived. Catching up with a friend yesterday, he told me an encouraging story of a woman he knows who survived a very similar situation.
Not long ago, this woman contracted the Swine influenza virus (SIV) or swine flu. As a result, she was in a coma for almost three weeks. When she awoke, her vision was affected, and she needed extensive physical therapy. To this day, she has lingering physical issues. However, she said that through this life-threatening situation, she drew her closest to God. Today her faith in God has never been stronger. She still has concerns but finds comfort in knowing He will never leave her.
There is no definitive answer to pain and suffering in this world, but we can know God is always in control and never leaves us either. When we focus on the eternal guarantee of everlasting life, Christ will comfort us through the darkness.
