When younger, I used to squeeze by on deadlines. I always procrastinated and waited until the last minute to finish a job. On one occasion, this character flaw cost me dearly.
My design company was relatively new, and a friend connected me to someone at American Airlines publishing. After completing a small job, the director was satisfied, and a few weeks later, requested help with a critical project.
Excited to hear back from her, we made an appointment to meet and discuss the details. I irresponsibly did not write the date down and committed it to memory. Sure enough, the week after, I had a terrifying feeling while casually working at my desk. As I looked at the calendar, I remembered the meeting was the day before; I had missed the meeting.
I immediately emailed and called but to no avail. The director never returned my emails or calls, and that was the last I heard of her. Although bothered by losing out on a big project, I was more disappointed with the impression I left.
After that day, I radically changed my organizational procedures. I purchased an appointment calendar, a journal, duplicated appointments and notes online, and set reminders. I also determined to do my best and arrive at meetings prepared and ahead of time.
My character flaw of procrastination is just one of many others I’ve worked on and continue to work on. My story teaches us all that we must first determine to change and then take radical steps to initiate the change we want to see. Too many times, we’re passive in our progress.
