Over the year I’ve seen some really great football games. Some of the most memorable have been recent Super Bowl games. There are many to reference but one in particular stands out to me. This one was Super Bowl LI (Feb. 5, 2017) – New England Patriots def. Atlanta Falcons, 34–28 (OT).
What makes this memorable to me was Tom Brady perhaps leading the Patriots back from down 25 points against a Falcons team which had the league’s most high-powered offense. During this game, the Patriots were down 25 points late in the third quarter. With time starting to run down, Brady threw a five-yard touchdown pass to running back James White to make the score 28–9. Unfortunately kicker Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra-point attempt hence the 9 points.
With the game starting to come to an end, in the fourth quarter, Brady managed to battle back and complete four scoring drives. One of these was the game-tying possession that resulted in a one-yard rushing score by White with 57 seconds left in regulation. This pushed the game into overtime. Then after getting the ball first, the Patriots went on to score the game-winnning touchdown from two yards out. This, cementing Tom Brady’s legacy as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history.
This is an encouraging story of comebacks just as Peter had so long ago. Despite failing multiple times and disappointing Jesus, he eventually came back and became the man God and Jesus knew he could be.
Read:
Read and meditate on Luke 22:54-62 and then on Mathew 13:16-19. What do these verses tell you?
Pray:
What areas in your life have you completely failed at? What was the result?
Meditate / Make It Real:
How will you lean on Jesus and God to help lift you out of failure and into victory? What fellow brother can you call on to help you?
