Every year we take a family vacation in the summer. We usually drive up north into the mountains or go to the beach. Every year the kids wait in eager anticipation of our trip. This year, however, due to COVID, we canceled our travel plans.
The kids were disappointed. They were looking forward to the “official” summer vacation, being they didn’t have a traditional end of the school year. They missed the clear distinction between the beginning and end of something. In reality, they miss the anticipation of arriving at the destination and enjoying new experiences.
In general, our vacations are simple yet adventurous. In the past, we’ve gone hiking, rafting, fishing, diving, and exploring. The only complaint we ever get is, “Are we there yet?” as most of the time, our trips range from 12-14 hours of driving each way. Regardless, once we arrive, they forget all about the long drive and have a blast.
Our family story reminds me we too can sometimes find our life’s journey long and tedious. Whether it’s the monotony of everyday chores or difficult detours we encounter along the way, life can seem long and arduous. What helps us on our trip is that as believers in Jesus Christ, we eagerly wait to one day arrive at our heavenly home.
For now, we must persevere to make the most of our journey and find encouragement and comfort, knowing we’re not alone on our trip. We will one day, “arrive.”
