Nowadays, most consider influencers as people that push an idea or product through social media or some other online platform. They’re usually due this for their gain. Growing up, however, I had the privilege of a real influencer in my life.
As a kid in elementary school, one of my favorite classes was art. One because I liked the subject and the second due to the teacher. As such, my elementary art teacher Ms. Rossi suggested I try out for a “special” art program. A little off-put by the idea of attending a “special” school away from my friends, I dismissed the flyer she handed me to give to my parents.
Shortly after, there was an open house event at school, which my parents and I attended. When we arrived at my art class, Ms. Rossi mentioned how disappointed she was they didn’t approve of having me test for the program. She expressed how she saw great talent and potential in me.
Surprised, they asked me what she was talking about. With nowhere to hide, I told them I forgot about it. They then asked her details about the program and how to apply. By God’s grace, I was able to take the test and register before the school year ended.
This event set me on a rewarding educational journey and, eventually, my career. Without realizing it, Ms. Rossi became one of the most influential people in my life. A few years ago, I had the urge to find and thank her. Unfortunately, I learned she had passed away.
Fortunately, I also discovered her impact was so significant that the school system created a prestigious art award, the Renay Rossi Awards of Excellence, to honor and pay tribute for her dedication and influence.
Although I never got to thank her personally, I find comfort in knowing many others share the same experience of being blessed by her presence and life.
