When the financial crisis hit in 2008 everyone was worried about their money. People began to question the security on the government backed FDIC. Many saw their portfolio investments dramatically shrink and others completely wiped out. All of the years they had spent investing and saving, watching their money grow was now gone. To add to all this, there was rampant fraud, misinformation and securities backed by nothing more than a promise.
Today we need to reflect on where our security lies. Is it on men, ourselves, our possessions? Mathew 6:21 states “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” In and of itself, this verse is pretty straight forward. Whatever you value, is where you will put all your energy and effort into. It’s where you will invest your all. But let’s look further because what really matters is WHAT your treasure is or should be. 1 Corinthians 3:12 states “their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.”
In essence what this verse is saying is that there will be a time when your investments will be tested and revealed by fire. This is pretty hard core. Consider your life. When the tribulations of life come and the fire is tested what will be left over? Today I encourage you to reflect on Mathew 6:19-20 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”. What we must do is stop “investing” our security and our hope on things that will eventually perish or be left to someone else. yes, we’re commanded to provide and be good stewards of what God has given us but more importantly, we must invest the talents, gifts and resources that God has given us for heavenly treasures. That treasure is fully backed and secured by the Creator of the universe.
There’s nothing in the universe more secure than that!
Encouragement:
God will reward your efforts for Him as treasures in heaven. He wants to do this and takes pleasure in a job well done.
Fx3 Challenge:
Read: Read Mathew 6:21.
Pray: Ask if what you value differs from what God values most. Pray for conviction and affirmation.
Meditate / Make It Real: Think about what it will take to transform your heart and start seeing treasures as he sees them, the sacrificing of ourselves for others.
