Leading up to our wedding, we didn’t know what married life would be like after the reception. There were so many questions and some worries, but in general, we were excited by our new venture together. We would soon be husband and wife. The day finally came, and we had a great time. We made so many great memories.
A couple of weeks later, we returned home, and it was now time to settle into married life. I want to say everything was rosy after that, but like all things worth the time and effort, it takes work. Relationships are challenging. Anyone who claims their relationship is a breeze is either lying or in denial. Each of us struggles with our sinful nature and, as a result, tend to hurt one another unwillingly. On the other hand, God has gifted us with an enormous capacity to love as He does.
Looking back on now more than 16 years of marriage, we have identified twelve necessary elements for a healthy relationship. These are:
- God Centered
- Love
- Compassion
- Kindness
- Humility
- Gentleness
- Patience
- Listening
- Respect
- Forgiveness
- Trust
- Realistic Expectations
On our own, we would never be able to demonstrate all these elements. Thankfully, this is why we let Christ work in us and through us so that we can manifest many of these to each other.
