Growing up I was fascinated by the TV show MacGyver. Many of you reading this will have no clue what I’m talking about. Let me preface. MacGyver was this man who could build bombs, fire projectiles, disarm systems and pretty much save the day with just his intellect and his trusty Swiss Army knife.
After one of the shows, I asked my father how he could do so much with so little. “Physics son. Everything that man does is accomplished with physics”. “Amazing” I thought. Shortly after this conversation I was rummaging at a garage sale and came across a physics book. I peeked in and saw all sorts of charts, diagrams and complicated calculations. “This is it! I’ll finally be able to know everything MacGyver knows and will be able to do everything he does.” (I already had the Swiss Army knife).
I ran home and immediately started reading from page one. I think I got through a solid five pages and realized I had no idea what I was reading. Minutes later my enthusiasm waned, and this book went straight to the book shelf and eventually into a box. Come to think of it, I think it’s in a box under all my old yearbooks and sketchbooks.
Decoding
The problem was not with the physics book itself, it was the lack of someone revealing to me the principles so I could understand the details. Trying to read the bible with no guidance is like me trying to pick-up the physics book with no one giving me insight, knowledge. Could I read the entire physics book? Yes, but more than likely I will not understand 90%. It’s just not going to make sense no matter how much I read it. Understanding the bible is the same. The only way to truly understand God’s word is through the power of the Holy Spirit and intentionality to learn. We must ask for help and revelation before reading and then diligently be receptive to understanding.

As believers we have a Spirit which guides us in all understanding and reveals God’s truth to us through His word. Read 1 Corinthians 2:14 .
