GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) is a concept common to computer science and mathematics. It’s an expression which relates to the quality of output is determined by the quality of the input. Another way of saying you get out what you put in. A few years ago I had a conviction that I needed to remove all aspect of my life that were not contributing to my improvement. This included everything from food to media consumption. It’s been a long road but I can say that after a few years I’m 10x better place than I was then.
One of those deterimental aspects was media consumption or more specifically, the news. It was fraught with negative information, quarreling, murders, etc. There was maybe 1 min of redeeming information for every 29 minutes of garbage news including advertisements trying to sell me dissatisfaction. I also realized the the world I lived in was not reflective of this on a daily basis. I witnessed good people doing good things for others. I witnessed people lifting others up. Yes, we’re all imperfect humans which can and do hurt ourselves but not everyday to the extent the news portrays as “normal”.
Their job is to sensationalize and show us the worst of the worst. Why? Because we prefer to see that someone’s life is worse off than ours so we can we better about our lives and where we’re at. Subconsciously we’re wired to compare our lives to others for better or worse. In essence, TV plays us on both sides. We like to see others worse off the us and commercials so us that we’re missing out on the “best” that others have.
This is a blatant attack on our contentment and joy from the enemy.
Encouragement
God wants you to be filled by Him and nothing else. Proverbs 4:23 states “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
