Soaking in the Son
We do a lot of work around the house because the self-imposed and collaborative “honey do” list is quite extensive. Anyone who owns a home knows that the work never really ends. We tend to move from one project to another. One of those projects was exterior lighting.
The other day as I looked at our backyard, I thought it could benefit from a little ambient lighting at night. There are nights when the backyard is pitch dark and not inviting. As my son said, “it’s kinda creepy, dad.” So, adding a few ground lights to light up the trees brings life to the darkness.
The only challenge is the electrical wiring. These trees have deep, complex roots, and I’ve got underground sprinkler pipes and other lines. Trying to run electrical wiring to the house is much too complicated and risky. Therefore I opted for solar flood lights.
The installation was easy enough. I connected the solar panel to the light unit and stuck it in the ground. However, on the first night, I noticed only one of the two worked. It turns out that the one that didn’t work got too little light during the day. The one that worked was soaking in the sun for much longer.
To correct the issue, I moved the light to an area that received much more sunlight throughout the day. Both lights shined brightly at night and lit up the darkness this time.
My home improvement story reminds me of how we are to be a light to the world. However, we only shine brightest when we take in the Son’s glory to shine onto others. So take time today to think about how you are soaking in the Son to light up the darkness.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[a] they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Pray how you will soak up the Son to be a light in the darkness.
