In early 2021 a man was video recorded traveling eastbound on I-80 across the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toward Oakland. The kicker, the man, was riding in the back seat of a Tesla but without a driver. Authorities later identified the smiling man as Param Sharma. Shortly after, police received they tracked down 25-year-old Sharma and arrested him on two counts of reckless driving and disobeying a peace officer.
Sharma then spent the night in a Santa Rita jail but was out shortly after. After being released, reporters interviewed Sharma to ask him why he did it. Sharma defiantly said that his driving isn’t dangerous and boasted that he customarily does this. He then confessed to driving over 40,000 miles on Bay Area roadways over the past few years while in the back seat of a Tesla. However, in the past, his Teslas had tinted back windows.
He also said he had no plans of stopping because he firmly trusts and believes that self-driving vehicles are not only the future but already here today. His faith in this technology is so strong he said, “I’m gonna go in the back seat right now. You feel me? I’m waiting for my car to charge.” Of the incident, Nick Josefowitz, chief of policy for SPUR commented, “It’s just so dangerous. Cars are dangerous when they’re being driven by humans and they’re dangerous when they’re driven by robots that haven’t been certified.”
This story is an excellent reminder that although God grants us many tools and opportunities to help us along the way, Scripture teaches us that we must place our total faith in God to lead our lives. When we trust in things of this world, we expose ourselves to dangerous and destructive outcomes. Therefore, we must have complete confidence that God will get us to where we need to go. All you need to do is let him pilot your life.
