As we discussed the sale of our small flats boat, my wife focused on the possible pitfalls and issues that could arise. I, on the other hand, wasn’t too concerned about those things. This conversation came about because I met the potential buyers, an elderly couple, earlier that day, and they seemed legit. The couple then requested we do a sea trial to make sure all working accordingly. She was hesitant and didn’t trust them.
We have these kinds of conversations quite often, and it’s because my wife and I have different views on risk. Her focus is more on “Murphy’s Law,” whereas my approach focuses on “God is always in control,” and so there’s “no need to worry.” Rather than being upset or arguing, these instances remind me of our uniqueness.
For the most part, men are risk-takers. We go out and push the envelope to see what will happen. We thrive on going big and rewarded accordingly. Women, for the most part, are rational and logical. They see the bigger picture and the results of a decision way in advance. At first, this bothered me, but in time, however, I grew to value these differences.
There’ve been numerous times where if we took my approach, the results could’ve been disastrous. Also, at other times, if we would’ve taken her’s, we would’ve missed out on great opportunities. Now we discuss and pray over these tough decisions together. I won’t say we get it right all the time; however, we now live with the decision as one.
