Growing up, my father taught me to be a handyman. I remember waking up on weekends, and my father telling me it was “time to get to work.” He meant that we were going to take on a home project that would last all Saturday.
Whether it was building an addition to the house, repairing the pool, installing an appliance, plumbing, or yardwork, there was always something to do. “When are we done with all this?” I once asked my father, “One is never done, son. There’s always work to do.” he replied. With that, we were back at work.
I came to loathe weekends in my teens because I would much rather be at the beach, hanging out with friends or just lounging around. Over time, however, I developed confidence for tackling projects, which initially seemed daunting. It wasn’t always pleasant, but I learned various skills through all of that time spent working closely with my father.
When I finally moved out on my own and bought my first home, I discovered all those years invested in apprenticing paid off. I was able to do my home repairs, and when something challenging came along, I tackled it without fear. Believe it or not, being a handyman was one of the most attractive qualities about me to my now wife!
My story reminds me that we must sometimes do the hard things even though we may not see immediate results. Scripture tells us to incorporate discipline into our life. In time, we will reap the rewards if we stay the course and trust in Him.
