The other night while channel surfing, I came across a fascinating documentary on PBS about falconry. The documentary follows the story of how falconer Lauren McGough, has practiced the ancient tradition of falconry since she was 14 and is one of the very few American women to do so.
Her passion eventually led her to Mongolia, where she studied with Kazakh eagle hunters and their ancient ways of falconry. For those unfamiliar with this dying tradition, falconry is the taking of wild quarry in its natural state and habitat by a trained raptor and training the animal for specific purposes. In Mongolia, the Kazakh men use their eagles for hunting prey.
Today fewer than 300 Kazakh eagle hunters remain. When asked about whether this ancient tradition was going extinct, their leader replied, “No. We continue to teach the next generation our ways as we have for many, many generations.”
This documentary reminds me we too are to pass on teachings to future generations lest they forget. Scripture tells us it’s our responsibility to teach our children the word of God, so they, in turn, may teach it to their children and their children’s children.
