There’s an exciting television series called “Forged in Fire.” In this reality TV show, amateur bladesmiths are invited to patriciate in a competition to forge historic weapons with remnant pieces of metal. The show begins with the judges providing raw materials and then allowing them to create their weapon of choice from those materials.
The show follows these contestants as they heat, weld, pound, and refine their metal into blades. The most important part of the process is the intense heating of the materials they selected. This extreme heating is necessary for the blade to survive the strength and stress tests.
The forging process used in this show incorporates the use of a furnace that burns from 700-1200 degrees. The intensity of heat is required for the metals to fuse appropriately and withstand the forging process. This heat treatment improves its strength, hardness, toughness, and removes impurities.
Finally, when the metal reaches the desired state of mailability, it’s ready for shaping through extreme pressures such as bending and pounding. When the metal cools, the bladesmith has given rise to a much more durable, sturdy, and resistant metal.
