A few years ago, I wanted to get scuba diving certified. I decided to get certified because I no longer wanted to miss out on opportunities. A friend of mine, holding multiple certifications, referred me to the “salty dog.” Intrigued by the name, I went ahead and contacted him.
I called up the instructor, and we coordinated the day and place to meet. He gave me a very brief overview and not much more. The following day we met up. As he opened the door, I saw why my buddy Jon referred to him as the “salty dog.”
There before me stood a burly older man with very tan leathery skin. He had a handlebar mustache, wrinkles etched in his face, chest, and arms from his years in the sun and breathed shallow breaths. The moment he spoke, it became clear why Jon gave him this name, “Alright then, get yer stuff, sit there and let’s get started. Save your questions for the end.” he said shortly with a deep scratchy voice.
Over the weeks, I discovered why Jon had given him this nickname; it was a term of endearment. They had become friends over the years, and he valued Jorge’s experience, expertise, and friendship. Jorge’s appearance demonstrated the years he’d dedicated to his passion and, as a result, personified the nickname given to a sailor who’s spent much of their life at sea.
My story reminds me we should value the counsel and guidance of those who’ve come before us. There is wisdom in age, and the closer we listen, the more we’ll learn.
