Looking out my window, I watch as my children run around the yard and chase each other. I smile, listening to their conversations and imaginations run wild. When I see this, I think about my expectations of them when they were younger.
When my children were babies, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great when they’re a little older,” so I could do more with them. When they were toddlers, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if they were potty trained” so they could be more independent. As time passed, there seemed always to be a “better” alternative.
However, this changed when I one day looked back and realized how quickly time passed. I was no longer thinking about “wouldn’t it” but rather “what happened?” At that moment, I decided I would take in and appreciate each stage of their lives.
Unfortunately, sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking there’s a “perfect” time. The reality is the “perfect” time is today because tomorrow is never assured.
