When I first met my wife 17 years ago I was immediatley hooked. She was beautiful, kind, honest, inviting and a breath of fresh air. Ever since then, we’ve been inseparable. Over the years however, our love has matured from the initial “honeymoon” phase.
We’ve had both great times and challenging. There’s been multiple home relocations, three children, starting a business, financial difficulties, rewarding experiences, etc. All of these events have strengthened our love and relationship. The one constant we committed to from the beginning, making Christ the center of our relationship and dying to our individual needs for each other. In this unity we’ve found strength.
The “feelings” I had for her in the beginning are different now. When I tell her “I love you” now, there is much more to it. These words are a reminder of where we’ve been, where we’re at and we’re were going. They summarize our journey together and my promise of a life-long commitment to her. They are words of assurance.
Christ in is love for us and as assurance of something better also gave us a promise. This promise is the Holy Spirit. In John 14:16 Christ promises to send us a lifelong partner. This is a promise and not conditional on whether you “feel” it or not. Once we’ve accepted Him as Lord and Savior he promises to never leave us. Feelings can be great but also misleading. With God, promises and permanent.
We’re never alone. We have more than a lifelong partner. We have an eternal partner.
How will you rely more God’s promises than on your feelings?
