I thought I was doing the right thing. I was reading the scriptures, praying, meditating on God’s goodness and trying to live a righteous life. At the time we were newly married and we were each walking in faith. Occasionally we would pray together or do a devotional. For the most part, it appeared I was continuing the same disciplines I had developed before we got married.
One day as I was reading through the book of Genesis, one verse in particular stood out and convicted me. In Genesis 3:9 God asks Adam “where are you?” This was powerfully convicting considering where Adam was BEFORE God asks him that question. You see, prior to Eve’s arrival, Adam was walking with the Lord. He had fellowship, time and a relationship with Him. After Eve came into the picture, it appears he continued to have the same relationship. There was just one problem.
When God created Eve to come alongside Adam, he neglected to disciple and mentor Eve as God had done with him. He went about his business and excluded Eve from his assignment. Before Eve, God had tasked Adam with the responsibility to watch and care over all he had given him ( Genesis 2:15 ). That included everything from that put and beyond.
Now because of his lapse in spiritual discipleship, Eve had fallen and took Adam along with her. After this, God holds Adam accountable for the problem. “Where are you”. This is so powerful because it encompasses both the physical and spiritual. God knew where he was physically located. What he wanted to know was where was Adam spiritually. It was a question of personal introspection. Basically, why did you do this and why did you let this happen?
We must first lead by example before we can lead others. Genesis 3:1-10.
Where are you…spiritually? What will you do to take charge?
